Influences, Inspiratons And Likes

Here are a selection of some of Sioux's known likes and inspirations, including quotes, which didn't really have a home or a page that they fitted on before. I thought they may be of interest to read, however this is still under constuction .

"I read a lot of short stories, like The Pan Book of Horror Stories." Siouxsie Sioux '78

This story helped inspire some of Sioux's lyrics (mainly the intro) in the early (1976/77 live) versions of 'The Lord's Prayer' and 'Red Over White.'  Sioux understandably connected with this story, set in Kent, about a girl in an orphanage named Janet with black hair and white skin.

This story deals with child manipulation / violence, so please don't read if you feel uncomfortable in regard to this.

The Cat That Walked by Himself
By Rudyard Kipling -
from the Just So Stories
Click above to link to the story that features an illustration of a cat walking alone through an arch of snow covered trees, that Sioux said helped inspire 'Red Over White', as well as liking and reading Rudyard Kipling stories when she was young and covering 'Trust in Me' from the Jungle Book, also by Kipling. J. G. Ballard ..."who I think is Britain’s best living writer. Reading 'Crash' (Inspiration for 'Miss The Girl') was my first experience of a semi-erotic novel; I loved the tension, the violence and the detail of it. I recently bought a collection of his complete short stories, dating from the late Fifties up to 2000. I am interested in people who choose not to be part of the majority. I also like the fact that he always seems to attach himself to misfits, people who defy the rest of society". Sioux 2002.

poe.gif Edgar Allen Poe Read about the man who inspired everyone who is anyone. Sioux's earlier lyrics were inspired by short horror stories, some of which were written by Poe (Premature Burial etc..) He not only wrote true gothic stories of morbid macabre situations but stories that were psychologically disturbing. "The horror of the mind" as Sioux put it. She also mentioned The Masque of the Red Death , a Poe story in an early interview. Visit here for more of his stories.

 Film

hitch.gif Hitchcock  nothing really needs to be said about this man, as anyone, not only those who likes Sioux should be aware of his influence. Dali, creatured the dream sequences in his movie 'Spellbound' .

Jayne Mansfield This links to the Marie Claire article that inspired Sioux to write 'Kiss them For me', the title of a Jayne Mansfiled film. Website

Brooks.jpg Silent Ladies / Louise Brooks etc ..Sioux has looked like a lot of silent film actresses all of them can be said to have influenced her look at some point. Siouxs crop and bob hairstyles circa 87/88 are very Louise Brooks  and Louise definitely had an attitude you could attribute to Sioux..."If I bore you, it will be with a knife!" Brooks.
Many other silent film stars are here too.

Carolyn Jones  Unfortunately, I couldn't find any decent sites just dedicated to just the original Mortica. Plenty of sites on the Addams Family but no pictures doing her justice, with her best sexy / sinister poses. Sioux always said she loved the way she looked.

 Artists

bosch.gif

Hieronymus Bosch (1) (2) Not really any good sites dedicated to one of the most original Medievil artists, but plenty here's links to two galleries - strange looking self portrait (left)!   "The first painter I was really intrigued by was Hieronymus Bosch. I saw one of his paintings when I was very young and I spent ages with a magnifying glass looking at all the little details of his figures. I was fascinated by things that were a bit disturbing, so I loved those half-man/half-bird (The Garden of Earthly Delights) creatures, the images of Hell and Purgatory — all these cruel things that were happening to people". Sioux 2002.

dali1.gif Salvador Dali   (1) (2) Madman, Surrealist,  artist,  call him what you will, but altogether very inspirational. He created the dream sequences in the Hitchcock movie Spellbound, The Mae West Lips sofa, the Lobster telelphone and the 'soft watch'  / melting clock paintings.

strav.gif Stravinsky  Read about the man who composed the 'Rite Of Spring' , when first performed this piece of music caused the audience to riot as it made them angry and stirred emotions, it was like nothing they had heard before. It puts me in mind of the people who kicked their TV screens when the Sex Pistols swore in the infamous Bill Grundy incident!!!
